Feathers are a fun way to express your inner eclectic, eccentric style. They made their first major fashion intro back in 1932 when Marlene Dietrich donned a dark feather boa in “Shanghai Express”. The trend hit another peak when Proenza Schouler presented a peacock inspired show in the spring of 2010 to critical acclaim. Now in 2012 feathers are making a splash at the runways shows of fashion legends Oscar de la Renta and Ralph Lauren. Hollywood is also getting in on the fluffy feather trend; Drew Barrymore, Blake Lively and Lea Michele have all been spotted donning feathers on the red carpet.

Feathers are not only for dresses this year, you can put the bird like accessories in your hair, on your ears and just about anywhere you like.  For an understated feather look, try peacock inspired earrings; pair with boho chic waves in your hair for a fun playful summer look. For a bolder feather inspired look try a black mini dress with a feathered bottom, similar to Kelly Roland at the “X Factor” premier earlier this year. If you’re really feeling daring you could put a feathered extension into your hair, theses fun accessories add movement to your do and you can color coordinate them to your outfit as well.

Try The Trend Tips

Here are some tips, to help you rock the feather trend without looking like a close cousin of Mr. Big Bird.

Feather accessories should be kept singular, choses one and you’re done. Too much plumage can make you look like a free roaming chicken. Keep it classy and chose your feather piece wisely.

Don’t fear feather color. Colorful feathers are making a huge splash this year, so there’s no reason to only wear black. Try out the colors of the rainbow, pastels, hot pinks, creamy pearl what every floats your feathered boat.

Keep everything else simple; let your feathers stand out. Avoid wearing feathers with bold prints or other statement accessories. The feathers are eye catching enough and add a texture to your look, if you try to pair them with other competing styles you run the risk of looking very busy. Instead try wearing complimenting but contrasting colors with your feathers, this will still create another layer of depth to your look without going overboard.
