Are you into mom jeans? Basic t-shirts in every color? Beanies that cover your unruly hair when it’s having a bad day? Then you may be part of the “normcore” trend and don’t even know it.

The newest word popping up in every fashion connoisseur’s or aficionado’s vocab as of late is definitely “normcore”. Not sure what is? We’ll break it down for you.

Normcore is a new trend that focuses on being “normal” and blending in rather than setting yourself apart, as fashion usually does. The word is derived from the two words “normal” and “hardcore” to makeup the trend’s namesake. Being hardcore normal is what the trend is about and could possibly be the one of the plainest trends there ever was.

It can be a bit tricky to give a proper definition of what this trend is and how it properly emerged since the crew of Seinfeld have been doing it since the 90’s and Steve Jobs made it his everyday uniform. Normcore is, essentially, about wanting to blend in. You choose to wear what is considered normal clothing so it’s a very conscientious trend despite it wanting to seem like there was no thought put into it. It can be seen on the streets of NYC on any given day and it’s hard to differentiate a normcore wearer from a regular middle-aged person with no interest in high fashion.

A good example of normcore fashion is VFILES’ host and casting director Preston Chaunsumlit. Preston almost always wears basics- t-shirts, jeans, sweaters, beanies and wears them right. He’s most notably known for wearing a very basic pair of white clogs that we usually only see on older women, if that.

It’s important to note, however, that people like Preston wear these pieces on an everyday basis and have been for a long time, long before this trend started. It’s more of a lifestyle for them, rather than a trend, so this would be the main difference between them and art students walking down the streets of SoHo.

Normcore is definitely not for everybody for the long run but can be worn by all on any given day. Forget about all that you’ve learned about fashion (but don’t forget the basics) throughout the years and start anew. Normcore doesn’t call for name brands, trends (ironic), or social association so go back to the basics in your closet and look at them in a new light.
