Braids have been a big trend this past year and it looks like they won’t be going anywhere this upcoming year as well. We saw braids on a lot of major runway shows like Baja East, Mara Hoffman, and our favorite, Donna Karan. The braid showcased on the Donna Karan runway reminded us a lot of our childhood friendship bracelets and getting to do that to our side braid made it a whole lot more fun.

If you loved the Donna Karan braid as much as we did, give the braid a go. It won’t be the easiest braid but the end result will make it all worth it.

Step 1. Brush the hair out. We want the hair to be as smooth as possible so add a bit of hair oil or serum. If you want the opposite effect, switch out the moisture for texturizing spray instead.

Step 2. This is where it starts to get a little tricky. Pick a side where you want your braid to fall. Then, divide the hair into 2 pieces and divide those 2 pieces in 2 pieces so you have 4 equal pieces altogether.

For the sake of this tutorial, we’re going to call each piece by a number so the outer piece is number 1, the next are 2 and 3, and the one closest to your ear is number 4.

Step 3. Now that you have 4 pieces, start with the piece that is on the outside first. So take piece number 1 and go over number 2 and then go under 3 and over number 4. It sounds complicated but stand if you stand in front of the mirror it’s a whole lot easier. The motto for this braid will be “over, under, and over” just in case you forget where you left off.

Step 4. Now that strand number 1 reached the end, it’s time for strand number 2 to do the same thing. Take strand number 2 over number 3, under number 4, and over number 1. Repeat this until you have no hair to braid left.

Step 5. Secure with a dark elastic. If you want it to look exactly like the Donna Karan braid, pull out some of the braid to make it look fuller. Spray a bit of hairspray on the braid to keep it in place.
