Moisturizing your face is one of the most basic steps for anti-ageing and for a healthy face in general. One of the most common mistakes is not applying any moisturizer to your face to begin with (but that’s a separate topic) or not applying the right way. It’s easy to think that all you have to do is slather it on and walk away—big mistake.

There’s a lot more to simply applying moisturizer so that your face can reap the benefits. For the best moisturizer application, try the doing the following:

To start off, find the right moisturizer for your skin type. Determine whether your skin is dry, normal, combination, or oily and try samples of different creams before purchasing. If you use it for a few days and see that your skin feels softer, has no breakouts or irritation, and your skin doesn’t dry out throughout the day, you’ve got a winner.

Be gentle and apply upwards motions. Your skin is delicate so it has to be treated as such. When applying your cream, gel, or serum, use your ring fingers as it’s the weakest fingers on your hand and there will be less tugging on the skin. Use upward motions to fight against gravity and help with premature ageing. This is all especially important when treating the eye area as it’s the thinnest, most delicate skin on your face.

Rub those hands together and press the moisturizer in to the skin. When your rub your hands, it creates warmth and when pressed to the skin, it opens up the pores and allows the moisturizer to better seep in. Rub your hands together for about 15~20 seconds a place your hands on both cheeks, forehead and chin, and then on your neck.
