The Miss American Organization is undergoing some serious changes. In response to the Me Too movement, the new chair of the organization, Gretchen Carlson, said, “We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance.” She also announced that Miss American is not a competition rather than a pageant. Furthermore, the ladies will be judged more on what comes out of their mouth rather than the color of their dress.

So what about the bikinis you ask? The former pageant will no longer feature the swimsuit portion. So said bye-bye to bikinis! The bathing suit section will be replaced with a live interaction with the judges. Along with the bathing suit there will no longer be a gown portion of the competition either. Instead, contestants are asked to wear something that exudes confidence and portrays their personal style.

The goal is to empower young women and to make the organization more inclusive. Especially to those who don’t want to strut across a stage in a bikini and heels.
