Late Fashion Icon Memorialized Through New Spider Name

It might not seem like having a spider named after you would be a compliment, but for the legendary late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, that is exactly what it was meant to be.

Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld was known for his signature black-and-white style, and a previously discovered but not yet named spider was recently named after what made Lagerfeld so popular. This lovely jumping spider is now named Jotus karllagerfeldi.

Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel and Fendi, had a signature look that made him popular: a white ponytail, black sunglasses, black-and-white suit with high, detachable white-collared shirts.

When researchers discovered the spider and decided upon its name, they wrote in their research, “Karl Lagerfeld inspired us with his unique sense of design and this new spider with big black eyes and white kent collar reminds us of his later looks — a fashion icon in black and white.”

Karl Largerfeld passed away in February 2019, leaving behind a long fashion legacy people were look back upon fondly for centuries to come. In the meantime, he lives on in his many tributes, from spiders to his posthumous makeup line.
