ESSENCE bring texture to the runway

The inaugural ESSENCE Fashion House NYC recently took place, and the show ended with quite a bang.

Texture on the Runway closed out the famous fashion show, and they did so complete with more curls and hairstyles than you could have imagined in one catwalk. From mohawks to top knots to mountains of curls, the inspiration for these looks is said to have come from various works of art, much of which included different types of texture.

Stephen Seven Hudson, the hairstylist responsible for the finale’s gorgeous looks, wasn’t afraid to include kinky, curly textures — something we don’t generally see on the runway. However, many of the famous black hair shows, including Bronner Bros. International Beauty Show and Texture On The Runway, aim to create a space in fashion (and in general) where women of color are able to embrace, show off, and celebrate their hair.

It’s a unique forum for creative expression that Hudson has provided through his both incredible and unique hair designs and the platform he shares them on.
