The fashion world lost a legend and an inspiration.

People all over the globe are mourning the death of Karl Lagerfeld, an iconic name in the industry for over 40 years. The German-born designer served as creative director for Chanel and Fendi as well as his own eponymous international fashion label.

Lagerfeld died early Tuesday in Paris, Chanel told the Associated Press in a statement. He was 85 years old.

Following the reports of his death, fellow designers and celebrities including Donatella Versace, Gigi and Bella Hadid and Victoria Beckham paid tribute to Lagerfeld on social media.

“Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I,” Versace shared on Instagram. “We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you.”

Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of Fendi owner LVMH, said: “With the passing of Karl Lagerfeld we have lost a creative genius who helped to make Paris the fashion capital of the world and Fendi one of the most innovative Italian houses. We owe him a great deal: his taste and talent were the most exceptional I have ever known.”

Lagerfeld will be remembered for his trademark ponytail, dark glasses and tailored black jacket. He once called his glasses “my burka” and referred to his public image as a mask, a caricature of himself that he embraced. Lagerfeld was also famous for speaking his mind and had a knack for making outrageous comments.

In the past Lagerfeld revealed in an interview that he would not want anyone to see his body after death, so many are speculating whether there will be a final viewing for his funeral. As many hearts are broken in the fashion community, Karl Lagerfeld has moved onto the great atelier in the sky.
