I recall an episode of one of my favorite cartoons when I was a kid where the main characters were constantly behind on all of the latest fads. They’d go to see the other neighborhood kids who were walking on stilts or wearing elaborate sunglasses, and when they left and returned with their own stilts or glasses, the other kids had already moved on to the next cool thing.

Fashion, much like that episode’s generic fads, moves fast. Looking at it psychologically, what likely happens is that when a look becomes popular, it starts showing up everywhere. Eventually, someone gets tired of it and starts their own look just for a change of pace. If that look catches the attention of other people, then that look becomes popular, and soon enough, it starts showing up everywhere. It’s a matter of saturation, you see.
