Straight from the BAFTAs red carpet
With award season in full swing, it’s London’s turn to host with the 73rd annual British Academy Film Awards. With dazzling stars and members of the royal family in attendance one thing is for sure, the stars come to stun in style. Here are some of the style hits and misses from the BAFTAs red carpet.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Catherine
The biggest award show in the UK wouldn’t be complete without a royal appearance, and we weren’t disappointed. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Willam and Catherine, made a royal entrance with William wearing a traditional tux and Kate wearing a stunning white Alexander McQueen. The McQueen gown features gold sequin accents, accessorizing with gold sparkling heels and fine Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.
Ella Balinska
“Charlie’s Angel” star, Ella Balinska, was one of the rare stars that walked the red carpet in a daring floral print that some are saying was a miss. Balinska’s Giambattista Valli Couture gown featured a lot of ruffles on a white material with a pink floral scheme that wasn’t too flattering for Balinska’s body. The gown style featured a short-leg dress with a cape forming from the top of the dress covering the shoulder down to the elbow, throwing off the shape of Balinska’s frame.
Sandy Powell
This British costume designer walked the red carpet in an eggshell colored Ian Frazer Wallace pantsuit with flare pants and got really creative with her ensemble. At first glance, you may think that her pantsuit features a print but she actually had stars in attendance sign her pantsuit that she plans to auction off. The auction proceeds will be donated to the Art Fund and help director Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage (near the nuclear power station in Dungeness) from being sold.
Charlize Theron
Nominee for Best Leading Actress for her role of Megyn Kelly in “Bombshell,” Charlize Theron graced the BAFTAs red carpet in a flowing, pleated purple gown by Dior. The vibrate gown color was enough and called for low-key accessories including a silver and diamond band necklace with black stilettos.
Saoirse Ronan
Nominated for Best Leading Actress for her role in “Little Women,” Saoirse Ronan walked the red carpet in a simple black Gucci gown with spaghetti straps. Ronan’s style reminds me of a red carpet ready, upgraded version of the iconic 90s pop star Posh Spice’s favorite style staple, the little black Gucci dress.
Naomi Ackie
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” star Naomi Ackie walked the red carpet in a yellow Valentino gown with a cape detail on the shoulder for an elegant one sleeve style, completing the look with a gold strappy stiletto.
Scarlett Johansson
Celebrities came out in color this year for the BAFTAs, including nominations for Best Leading and Supporting Actress for her roles in “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit,” Scarlett Johansson. She shined on the red carpet in a salmon-colored Versace gown with a beaded bodice and flowing mermaid skirt featuring ostrich feathers. The flowing mermaid skirt made Johansson glide down the red carpet with style and grace. Well done Versace.
Daisy Ridley
“Star Wars” star Daisy Ridley walked the red carpet in a dark teal Oscar de la Renta gown featuring a sweetheart neckline with mesh paneling in the bodice and a sheer pleated cape draped over one shoulder. Thought the gown is dark teal, it looks black at first glance. Ridley is definitely in the top for best-dressed at BAFTAs combining classic Hollywood with a touch of modern style.
Olivia Colman
Olvia Colman is known for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix original series “The Crown” and she dressed for the BAFTAs befitting a queen, Alexander McQueen that is. Colman walked the red carpet in a flowing black Alexander McQueen gown with sheer long sleeves and an embroidered floral bodice. Much like her Netflix role, she proves to us she is a queen when it comes to fashion.
Florence Pugh
Nominated for Best Supporting Actress in “Little Women,” Pugh walked the red carpet in a unique dress that looks like the combination of a little black dress with a pink ruched, open front dress by Dries Van Noten. With a slicked-back hairstyle, she accessorized with diamond earrings and necklace, finishing off the look with platform strappy heels.
