The state of California signed a bill into law that would protect people from racial discrimination based on their natural hairstyles. This is the first statewide law of its kind passed in the U.S. and the bills is called Creating A Respectful and Open Workplace Natural Hair Act (also known as the CROWN Act).
The CROWN Act updated state anti-discrimination law so that the term race included traits historically associated with race. In the measure’s text, legislators state that society has subjected certain features equating with “blackness” to unequal treatment.
More states are following the example set by California, in February, the New York City Commission of Human Rights passed similar protecting natural hair in schools, the workplace, and public places.
