Balmain

Summer may be a couple of weeks away still but we’re already looking forward to picnics in the park due to this season’s hottest trend: the gingham trend. The big. playful checkers showed up on a few different runways for Spring 2014 including Derek Lam, Balmain, Carven, and Prada in classic black and white but also lovely pastel colors like pink and blue. What was once considered retro has made a comeback as a modern print that can be styled as many ways possible.

Not sure how to wear the trend? Take note so you can wear this trend all summer without looking too much like a picnic blanket.

Start off with a classic gingham top. This is the easiest way to dip your toe into the trend as crop tops are big this season and the print won’t be too overwhelming if you’re not used to it. Because it’s a very busy trend visually, it’s important to pair it up with a solid color to have some balance in the look. A solid-colored midi skirt or high-waisted trousers are good options to go with.

Trousers or skirt. Wearing gingham trousers is a bit more daring than the top because the print is a lot more plentiful and eye catching. As previously mentioned, the general rule to gingham is to always have a solid color in the mix to balance out the look so a solid top will look best. If you’re wearing trousers, be sure to note that the size of the print can make certain parts of your body appear larger; the bigger the checker, the bigger certain areas will look. Small print is the way to go if you don’t want certain areas to be highlighted.

Suit it up. If you want to go full-out with this trend, a suit is the way to go like at Balmain. Usually the way to go is pairing the suit with solid colored heels and top but if there are details on the suit like maybe gold or silver, the shoes can definitely match that. For this look, it’s best to keep your makeup looking natural as the rest of your ensemble is taking the show.
