Applying a primer prior to foundation is key to getting your makeup to stay all day and all night long. It helps fill in your pores while also filling wrinkles and fine lines, leaving you with a smooth surface that will make the foundation glide on seamlessly. There are plenty to choose from whether it’s from the drugstore or higher end so all you have to do is find the one that works for you.

The most of your troubles is going to be finding the right one as it can be just as trying as finding the perfect foundation but as long as you can identify the needs of your face, it’ll be a piece of cake. See what things you should take into consideration when looking for that perfect primer.

Skincare concerns. There are primers that cater to specific skincare issues and will help treat your skin or at least conceal. The most common tends to be acne or redness. Look for a primer that has salicylic acid and is green to help dry out those spots while concealing redness as well.

What your skin lacks or needs less of. Unless you were blessed with perfectly normal skin, you either need moisture and light for your lackluster skin or need less oil and a matte finish. For dry or dull skins, try either a moisturizing or purple/pink primer to bring light to the skin. For combo to oily skins, use a matte finish primer to avoid looking too shiny throughout the day.

Mature skin. Women with mature skin should stay away from mattifying primers as they can make wrinkles look even worse. Find a primer that has antioxidants and will fill in lines properly to get that smooth skin finish.

Sensitive skin. If your skin is sensitive, make sure to read the ingredient list and stay away from those that have ingredients you know you’re allergic to. Aside from that, look for primers that are oil, paraben, silicone, and fragrance free to avoid irritation. Looks for ingredients like vitamins, aloe, and chamomile that will help nourish while soothing the skin as well.
