The flip hairstyle is making a huge comeback

No trend in fashion is ever really new. Every idea and concept has been recycled from some previously popular (or unpopular) movement. This notion holds true for clothes, accessories, shoes, beauty, and hair. From bob cuts, bangs, big curls, middle parts, and sleek low buns, popular hair trends come and go as time goes on. One such style, starting in the ’60s, has seen multiple resurgences and is super popular among celebrities right now.

The “flip” so named for the gravity-defying heat-induced flip one puts into the bottom of their hair so that the ends curl upright in perfect swooshing motion, was made popular by the incomparable Jackie Kennedy. Since, the flip has been an “old Hollywood” classic, made famous again on Friends (though slightly different, and dubbed “The Rachel”) in the ‘90’s and making a comeback in 2019.

While Jackie matched the voluminous bottoms on the top of her head as well with inches of volume, celebrities are taking on a more sleek approach to the flip. Many have opted for a slicked-back or half-up version of the famous hairstyle, giving all sorts of textures and levels of volume, or flipping the style around and rocking and inward flip.

The modern take on a classic ‘do is the perfect way to appear polished and edgy, timely and traditional.
