Winter dates create such a dressing dilemma. After all, you want to dazzle him with your awesomeness on those chilly evenings, not get lost under piles of pullovers. Luckily, you don’t have to trade temperature for trendiness. And you can leave your hoodie at home without freezing your fanny. Here are a few tricks for dressing warm while looking cool.

A great pair of tights. Tights are one of the most versatile elements in your wardrobe. A pair of black tights with black polka dots are slimming, yet add texture to an outfits. Wear them under pants for extra warmth, with a mini, a sweater dress, or even with a great little black dress and strappy sandals. For the most slimming effect, go for tights with a tiny pattern in a monochromatic color scheme.

Skinny jeans and an eighties sweater. I’m convinced, skinnies are never going away. They look terrific with ballet flats, and better with stilettos. A heavy-weighted denim will help keep you warmer longer without adding bulk. Stick to a dark wash for a slimming effect. Throw a chunky, cable knit, oversize, boxy sweater over top of a tank top for a fun, flirty attire. Choose chunkier heels or flats when the weather is icy to protect your ankles.

A belted cardigan over a shimmery tank. If you have a fab shimmery, sequined tank that you just love, it’s all the better to wear on a winter date. Wear a matching the same color cardigan over top with a skinny belt to add curves and control the bulk. Or wear a cardigan in a bright, offbeat color to create drama.

Over the knee boots and over the knee socks. I love over the knee boots! Wear them under a knee-length skirt to look like a great pair of “tights” or with a mini skirt to add warmth. Better yet, wear a pair of woolen shirts and matching blazer, over the knee socks, and over the knee boots. You’ll stay warm, show off a hint of skin, and look awesome. Wear flat, over the knee boots to look sexy but not over the top.

A sweater dress. You can’t go wrong with a lightweight sweater dress. A simple dress that clings in all the right places looks super with a pair of dress boots and a little belt.

Faux fur shrug. Faux fur shrugs are as warm as they are cute. Wear it over any old turtleneck and your skinny jeans.

Feathered shawl. Feathers are still on the trend horizons, but now they are gravitating from the head to clothing. Find a great shawl or jacket embellished with feathers. The more feathers, the better.

A real motorcycle jacket. Motorcycle inspired jackets are cute. But real motorcycle jackets have substance and warmth. Choose the real deal with a removable lining for a look that’s warm and goes well with everything from jeans to floral dresses.

Spanx. Surprisingly, shapewear can raise your body temp just a bit. While the spike in body heat may mess up your circadian rhythm and keep you awake at night, it might also keep you warm on that winter date.

When all else fails, control the bulk of a great sweater with a skinny belt. Wear a pair of heels and extra long pants for a slimming effect. And if you’re still cold, you can always ask to borrow his coat.
