Rock the season’s must-have silhouette with these tips

You’ve seen them, you’ve judged them and you’ve most certainly considered buying them—but the real question is how do you actually wear jeggings?

At first glance, jeggings—denim leggings, usually made from a denim-spandex blend—may seem intimidating, unfashionable or too 1980s.  But with stars like Kate Bosworth and Beyonce flaunting them on the street and the red carpet—not to mention premium denim designers like Seven for All Mankind and J Brand offering up the style—you can rest assured that jeggings won’t be this year’s answer to the leggings-with-mini-skirt combo (a trend that we’re still trying to forget).

So now that we know jeggings are here to stay (at least for a while), here’s what you need to know to wear them right:

The Scene: Saturday Errands

The Look: The key to jeggings is to remember that regardless of cute factor, they’re not pants, and never will be.  However, they’re the perfect companion to dresses, long shirts and tunics—and look great topped with jacket. Like their cotton counterparts, jeggings can be dressed up or down, and on weekends you’ll look polished if you pair them with an oversized tee and ballet flats. With a cardigan on cooler days and a tank during the summer, leggings really can be a wardrobe staple.

The Scene: Sunday Brunch

The Look: Just like you no longer have to reserve satin and lace for night outs, jeggings can easily step up to the plate for stylish daytime outings.  For a Sunday brunch, embrace all things feminine by sporting a printed boyfriend blouse with a belt and ankle boots. For Friday casual days, you can go masculine-chic with an oversize blazer, classic tee and vintage loafers.  Like denim jeans, jeggings are adaptable and can look great in nearly every situation—just remember to avoid tight tops (you need to leave something to the imagination).

The Scene: Friday Date Night

The Look: Like Beyoncé and Ciara, who’ve both given jeggings a red carpet debut, take advantage of the sparkle trend by pairing them with a sequined mini dress, black blazer and patent heels.  Jeggings can also act as the perfect silent partner to a bolder, embellished shirt for an effortless evening look. If you’re of the “less is more” school, a solid black satin tank paired with costume jeweler (such as pearls or gold chains) will be dinner appropriate while drawing attention to both you and your new favorite trend.
