Scarves used to be paired with mittens and hats as a bulky, woolen way to keep out the cold but nowadays scarves are a versatile, year-round fashion trend. The trick to wearing scarves in the summer is to by scarves made from light-weight materials, such as cotton, silk or satin. Also, buying thin or skinny scarves will help to accentuate your outfit without making you sweat. Finally, break from tradition by wearing scarves in many different ways, not just wrapped around your neck.

Hip

Hip scarves are a hot trend right now and can really make an outfit pop. You can use a silk or cotton scarf as a hip scarf by folding it into a triangle and then tying the ends at one hip, to create an asymmetrical look. Skinny scarves can be tied around the waist or hip as a belt. Regular width scarves can be tied around the hips or waist in an obi fashion by wrapping them around your waist two or three times and tying the ends in a large bow in either the back or front. You can also buy premade hip scarves; these are typically made of light weight material that is nearly almost transparent and adorned with beads, sequins or metallic circles.

This type of scarf looks great over jeans, leggings or a slim fitting dress. Usually you should wear a neutral colored outfit and use the scarf to add flair and color to your outfit. Pair with sexy high heels, strappy sandals or ballerina flats.

Head

Head scarves are adorable and can really add some class or cuteness to an outfit. These can also help mask a bad hair day! Head scarves can be made by tying a regular scarf around your head: put the center of the scarf on your head (near the hairline on the forehead) and tie underneath at the base of the neck. Secure with bobby pins if needed. You may need to fold your scarf to get the desired width. You can also buy head scarves that are specifically designed to fit around your head.

Pair classier head scarves with vests, Capri pants, short-sleeved button down shirts and A-line skirts. Cutesy head scarves look great with t-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, light-weight flannel shirts, summer dresses and tank tops.

Neck

The most traditional way of wearing a scarf, around your neck, has gotten a make-over in recent days. Scarves now come in every color, size and material you can imagine. Neck scarves that are appropriate for summer time wear are those made of light materials or those that are very thin or skinny. Skinny scarves are typically worn wrapped around the neck once with the ends hanging down in front. Silk or satin scarves can be tied in various ways and can be worn underneath an open button-down shirt. You can also buy scarves that are pre-tied into complicated knots or ones that are cut to be “shaggy” and will drape very fashionably around your neck. These are white-hot right now and can be found cheaply at most affordable fashion stores.

There are no limitations to neck scarves. They can now be worn with any type of outfit, just make sure to match the look of the scarf to the type of outfit you are wearing. A ragged, casual cotton scarf is inappropriate for a suit, but a silk scarf is a perfect match.
